Though we don’t always submit regular blog posts to the site we do share a lot of information via the SV in the News page here on the site. That’s where you can find links to various bits of relevant news from across the UK. We do this by monitoring online mentions of volunteering + any reference to a marginalised group such as disabled people, those with learning difficulties, refugees & the newly arrived or ex-offenders and them provide a link to the original story and possibly a brief comment from us. If you are not familiar this this then please go have a look now!
A large number of the links we share on the SV in the News page are feel-good stories about individuals or groups who have overcome barriers to volunteering. We get to hear about them when the press sing their praises online on a local news or community site. However a much larger national news body has recently been singing the praises of a group of organisations who have impressed them over the last year as the Guardian has announced this year’s winners for the Public Service Awards.
Taking some time to look through the Winners Report will be time well spent but we would like to draw your attention to Mind the Gap, winner of the Citizenship & Volunteering category. Though there is no mention of supported volunteering we feel that this story goes a long way to demonstrating that people under the age of 25 can – and will – take a leading role in volunteering work if only given the right opportunity.
