finding the grass roots of supported volunteering

Middleton Park

This is another clip from the Volunteer Films project on the Community Channel. I realise that this is a somewhat sheltered situation in that it brings together two organisations – MPEC and Mencap – who each have their own mission to support disabled people but it seems such a simple yet productive idea. If you have not heard of this project yet then please let us introduce Middleton Park Equestrian Centre a few of their volunteers.

Things to listen for:

  • talk of finding volunteer opportunities for young people - not finding opportunities for disabled people
  • talk of developing rolls that meet their skills and aspirations - not their disability or barriers
  • establishing long term volunteering experience through the use of taster volunteering opportunities
  • talk of increasing confidence and of just being part of the team

Quote of the clip:

“…if you’ve got people around you who are prepared to support you take full advantage of it. You will gain conficence. you will gain experience. The way you view yourself, the way you view things around you will change.”
